SIGNED

Signed copies, all year. The shelf's the strongest one in the shop.

A rotating shelf of signed first editions. Rick Stein signs his own titles at the till here in person two or three times a year; visiting authors run roughly once a month. Recent signings: Paul Ainsworth (For the Love of Food), Mollie Hunter-Trissler (Our Oaken Bones). Browse the signed-copies section in store, or by post via the online shop.

Personalised at the till, never proxy-signed
CORNWALL & THE SOUTH WEST

Cornwall, on the right shelf. Locally set, locally written, locally published.

The Cornwall fiction shelf (Daphne du Maurier, Patrick Gale, Liz Fenwick), the cookery wall (Stein, Ainsworth, Outlaw, Padstow seafood), the coastal nature-writing list. Plus everything published by Mabecron Books, the small Cornish house that runs this shop, including the Cornish picture-book list at child-eye level.

Since 2016 · the founding partnership

Ten years on Broad Street, and forty years before that.

Ron Johns has been a Cornish bookseller since 1969. He opened his first shop, The University Bookseller in Plymouth, in 1974. Two years later, in 1976, he met Rick Stein in Padstow for the first time. The two of them talked about opening a bookshop together in the harbour town for the best part of four decades before they finally did it.

The Padstow Bookseller opened on 15 March 2016, as a three-way partnership between Ron, Rick and Sarah Stein. Six hundred square feet on the corner of Broad Street, a hundred metres back from the Quay, in a two-hundred-year-old unit. It is the only bookshop in Britain co-owned by Rick Stein.

The shop is part of the Mabecron Books group, the family-run Cornish chain that publishes locally-set Cornwall titles and runs sister shops in St Ives, Falmouth, and Dartmouth across the Tamar.

"I first met Rick in 1976, and we have discussed opening a book shop together for years."

Frequently asked · from the counter

Five questions we hear most.

Do you have signed copies of the latest Rick Stein title?

Often. Rick signs at the till here in person two or three times a year, and we hold a small stock of personalised first editions between signings. Phone the counter on 01841 533804 to check what is on the shelf before you make the trip in.

Are you open on a Sunday?

Yes. 10 to 4 on Sunday, 9 to 5:30 the rest of the week. The shorter Sunday slot reflects the harbour-tourist rhythm. The book club runs on the last Thursday of the month in the evening, when the shop opens later.

Do you post books UK-wide?

Yes. The online shop posts UK-wide, and the Pick and Mix subscription box runs monthly or quarterly to any UK address. Free postage over £40. Most orders go out the next working day.

Can I bring children into the shop?

The children's corner is at the front of the shop near the counter, deliberately, so under-fives can browse picture books at child-eye level while the buying parent stays in earshot. The Tonies counter is alongside.

Where do I find you exactly?

1 Broad Street, the corner unit at the top of Padstow harbour, a hundred metres back from the Quay. Walking up from the Stein Seafood Restaurant, turn right at Stein's Fish and Chips and we are on the corner. The sage-green shopfront with PADSTOW BOOKSELLER painted in serif across the fascia.
