Ron Johns has been a Cornish bookseller since 1969. He opened his first shop, The University Bookseller in Plymouth, in 1974. Two years later, in 1976, he met Rick Stein in Padstow for the first time. The two of them talked about opening a bookshop together in the harbour town for the best part of four decades before they finally did it.
The Padstow Bookseller opened on 15 March 2016, as a three-way partnership between Ron, Rick and Sarah Stein. Six hundred square feet on the corner of Broad Street, a hundred metres back from the Quay, in a two-hundred-year-old unit. It is the only bookshop in Britain co-owned by Rick Stein.
The shop is part of the Mabecron Books group, the family-run Cornish chain that publishes locally-set Cornwall titles and runs sister shops in St Ives, Falmouth, and Dartmouth across the Tamar.
"I first met Rick in 1976, and we have discussed opening a book shop together for years."
Ron Johns, The Bookseller magazine, 25 February 2016
